Empire style mahogany and gilt bronze cylinder desk, 19th century
Large Empire-style cylinder desk in mahogany and flamed mahogany veneer. This semi-cylindrical writing desk features eight palmette-keyed drawers on the front: five on the belt and three on an upper tier, itself topped with a green marble top. The flap is flanked by rich ormolu ornamentation decorated with winged victories, palms, a frieze of water leaves and a chariot led by a lover on the front. Opening with two ormolu swan-neck pulls, the cylinder reveals a leather-wrapped sliding top encircled by a gilded palmettes frieze, a niche and three drawers with fleuron pulls. The unit rests on four braced column uprights.
