Pair of gilt bronze candelabra signed Henri Vian in the Louis XV style

Pair of Louis XV style candelabra with four finely chased gilt bronze arms, one of which is signed "H.V". The knobbed shaft, decorated with rocaille and foliage, extends onto acanthus-leaf scrolls. Each gilded candlestick rests on a circular base scrolled with scrolls and foliage. The candleholders bear bud-shaped chalices. This ornament of acanthus leaves and flowers is typical of the Rocaille style, much imitated in the late 19th century. These bronze candlesticks signed Henri Vian (1858-1904) are in the style of the work of French ornamentalist and silversmith Juste-Aurèle Meissonier (1695-1750), leader of the "Rococo" movement under Louis XV. This bronzemaker, active in the second half of the 19th century and based at 5 Rue de Thorigny (Musée Picasso) in Paris, produced numerous interior ornaments such as chandeliers, fireplaces, balustrades... He is known to have two signatures in cursive letters, the first "H.Vian" and the second "H.V" on his later works.
