Brown patina bronze sculpture of Sapho after Jean-Jacques, known as James Pradier (1790-1852). The poetess leans with one hand on an ornate altar in the form of an Ionic column, and with the other, holds a lyre. She is adorned with jewelry and wears a fine antique-style tunic. Signed and dated "J. PRADIER 1848" and "VP" (for Victor Paillard) surmounted by a crown. Exhibited at the Salon in 1848, the bronze version of this work inspired by ancient art is now housed at Osborne House, the English royal residence on the Isle of Wight. "Sapho" was one of Pradier's most frequently reproduced figures. The Musée Girodet owns a bronze edition of this work. XIX° period, Circa: 1850 Dim: W:21cm, D:17cm, H:45cm. In very good condition.
