Brown patina bronze statue of"L'Espérance déçue" after Auguste-Marie Barreau (?-1922). L'Espérance is shown standing, arms crossed under her chest and head bowed in disappointment. She is dressed in an antique-style tunic. The allegorical figure probably represents Dido, founder and queen of Carthage. Enamored of Aeneas, she committed suicide in despair after being abandoned by the Trojan hero, at Jupiter's behest. Signed "BARREAU" on the base. Mentioned on the sides of the base: "Médaille d'or à l'exposition des Beaux-arts 1865" (sic) and "Acheté par l'État".
