LOUIS XIV STYLE MARQUETRY COFFEE TABLE

Louis XIV-style coffee table with an oblong top in wood marquetry, richly decorated with musical trophies framed by foliage, interlacing and floral motifs. It opens with a large drawer on one side, and stands on four tapered legs with curved fluting, joined by an X-shaped brace topped by an antique vase. Beautiful ornamentation of chased and gilded bronzes, notably the moulding encircling the top, decorated with foliage friezes. Napoleon III period. Louis XIV tables The tables are a success of the Louis XIV style. Richly decorated, the middle tables are majestic. The beautiful rectangular or round tabletop is made of marble, colored stone marquetry or wood and pewter marquetry. It is richly decorated with floral and plant motifs. The base, straight or sheath-shaped, is always sumptuously carved and decorated. The spacer, which joins the legs together, is formed of braced motifs surmounted at their crossing point by a large central motif. Marquetry and wood staining Marquetry underwent great development under Louis XIV. It is based on a preparatory drawing applied to the wood. A wide variety of wood species are used to provide a wide range of colors for contrasting decors: the yellow of almond and boxwood, the red of pear, the pure white of holly, the pinkish gray of Saint Lucia wood, the range of browns up to the black of walnut. Sometimes the woods are colored: they are dyed red, blue or green to accentuate the pictorial and relief effect. They can also be shaded, either by engraving or by soaking them in acid solutions. In very good overall condition, with beautiful wood marquetry in a variety of colors: red, yellow, blue, several shades of green and brown.
