A bronze sculpture with a brown patina depicting Joan of Arc, signed Eutrope Bouret. The saint is shown standing, dressed in medieval armor cinched with a sash tied at the waist, her hands clasped in prayer around her sword. This gesture parallels her warrior role with her connection to God, as the inverted pommel of the sword can be interpreted as a cross. Her flowing hair is crowned with laurel leaves, a symbol of her victory. The figure rests on a stepped base of red marble. This type of bronze sculpture reflects the Neo-Gothic style of the late 19th century, which offered a fantastical reinterpretation of medieval figures. Far removed from historical accuracy, the figures are adorned with symbols reminiscent of the medieval period: here, chainmail and pointed shoes.
Eutrope BOURET (1833-1906) was a French sculptor who exhibited at the Salon between 1875 and 1903. He is known for sculptures mainly of women, including an honorable mention in 1885.
