Brown patina bronze sculpture representing Joan of Arc signed Eutrope Bouret. The saint is depicted standing, dressed in medieval armour with a scarf tied around her waist, her hands joined in prayer around her sword. This gesture parallels her role as a warrior with her connection to God, as the upside-down pommel of the sword may suggest a cross. Her loose hair is crowned with laurel leaves, a symbol of her victory. This type of bronze is part of the neo-Gothic taste of the late nineteenth century, which takes up the characters of the Middle Ages in a fantastical way. Far from historical reality, the figures are adorned with symbols reminiscent of the medieval period: in this case, chain mail or pointed foils.
Eutrope BOURET (1833-1906) was a French sculptor who exhibited at the Salon between 1875 and 1903. He is known for his mainly female sculptures, for which he received an honorable mention in 1885.
