4 pencil drawings representing three studies from nature (including 2 studies of male nudes ) and one study from a mold, or from the hump, typical of academic art teaching in the 19th century:
1 - Academy portrait of a man seated on a stool, signed and dated at the top right: "V. GEOFFROY", "22 j[...] 98"
2 - Academy portrait of a standing man, leaning against a column, signed and dated at the top right: "V. GEOFFROY 17/11 97"
3 - Bust of a child, signed and dated top right: "V. Geoffroy", April 6, 1898
4 - Fireman preparing to climb a ladder, signed and dated top left: "V. GEOFFROY 1896 January 15"
The nude drawings , called "academies," were created from live models posing in the studio. They allowed student painters and sculptors to study anatomy. Drawing from plaster casts was a classic and rigorous exercise, enabling students to grasp the concepts of construction and values, while also mastering the classical aesthetic canons. These drawings were made by V. Geoffroy between 1896 and 1898. All are meticulously signed and dated. Four other male nude studies signed by V. Geoffroy are available. Dimensions without frame: W: 48cm, H: 62.5cm. Dimensions with frame: W: 52.5cm, D: 1cm, H: 67.7cm. Dimensions vary slightly between drawings.
