Four academic studies of male nudes, in graphite, from life. These nude drawings —called "academies"—were part of the academic art education as practiced in the 19th century. They were created from professional models posing in the studio, on a platform. This type of exercise allowed students to study anatomy. For a future artist, drawing from a live model, along with drawing from sculptures and antique statues, formed the basis of their artistic training.
