4 academic drawings in graphite representing three studies from life (including 2 male nude studies) and one study from a cast, or from the hump, typical of academic art education in the 19th century:
1 - Academy of a man seated on a column, signed and dated upper right: "V. GEOFFROY", "22 j[...] 98".
2 - Academy of a standing man leaning against a column, signed and dated upper right: "V. GEOFFROY 17/11 97"
3 - Child's bust, signed and dated upper right: "V. Geoffroy", April 6, 98
4 - Fireman preparing to climb a ladder, signed and dated upper left: "V. GEOFFROY 1896 January 15".
Nude drawings, known as "académies", were made from live models posing in the studio. They enabled student painters and sculptors to study anatomy. Drawing from casts was a classic and rigorous exercise, enabling them to grasp notions of construction and value, and at the same time master the aesthetic canons of antiquity. These drawings were made by V. Geoffroy between 1896 and 1898. All are scrupulously signed and dated. 4 other male nude studies signed by V. Geoffroy are available. Size unframed: W:48cm, H:62,5cm. Size with frame: W:52.5cm, D:1cm, H:67.7cm. Dimensions vary slightly according to drawings.
