A rare alabaster clock depicting " The Abduction of Europa " by Zeus transformed into a bull . Europa, dressed in an antique-style tunic that reveals one breast, sits on the bull's back, which is decorated with garlands of flowers, and holds a draped cloth in her hand, which billows in the air. The entire piece rests on a rectangular base into which is set the gilt bronze dial with Roman numerals, flanked by two dolphins in bas-relief. The dial is signed " Alibert A Paris ". The myth recounts that Europa, a Phoenician princess and daughter of Agenor, King of Tyre, while strolling along the seashore with her companions, caught the eye of Zeus for her beauty. The god decided to transform himself into a bull in order to approach her. Europa, moved by the animal's beauty, climbed onto its back. Zeus seized the opportunity to leap towards the sea and abduct her. Circa 1830
