A three-panel curved wooden screen, decorated with a painted ochre mountain landscape on a gold background, featuring two women washing clothes by a river in the foreground. French work from the 1930s. In very good condition, with some minor wear to the lower slats. The gilding is in excellent original condition. The screen, whose distant ancestor served as bedroom furniture in the 18th century, was intended to shelter those sensitive to the cold from drafts. In the 20th century, its decorative function seems to have overshadowed its utilitarian purpose. Some interior designers, such as Eileen Gray (1878-1976) and Jean Dunand (1877-1942), used it to reshape the space in modern apartments. Once the work of carpenters and upholsterers, the screen is now an individual artistic expression, the work of an artist-decorator. Art Deco period, Circa: 1930 Dim: L:135cm, D:3cm, H:168cm.
