An Art Nouveau period cage clock in bronze and polychrome cloisonné enamel, in an oriental style. The bronze structure is gilt and copper-plated, and decorated in places with acanthus leaves and small flowers. The entire mechanism is encircled by six columns with richly floral motifs, four of which form feet. Each column terminates in a button shape in a distinctly oriental style. The round dial has a green Alpine marble center and displays the hours in Roman numerals. It bears a signature on the front: "SERVANT FILS & J, Paris".
This 1900 clock testifies to the attraction to the Orient and the Orientalist aesthetic which experienced considerable growth in Western countries throughout the 19th century.

The technique of cloisonné enamels
Cloisonné is a technique for crafting objects decorated with enamel surrounded by curved copper wire. This ancient process, originating in the Arabian Peninsula, was imported to China in the 13th century. Artisans quickly mastered this technique and developed it to the point of making it a distinctly Chinese art form, which reached its golden age under the Ming dynasty. Chinese cloisonné is found on numerous objects such as vases, bowls, and boxes, and is captivating for its impressive number of partitions, which give it a rich and unique decoration. By the 14th century, Beijing enamels had spread beyond China's borders and were collected throughout Asia and Europe.
In the 19th century, it was Ferdinand Barbedienne, a great collector of cloisonné from the Far East, who introduced enamel into his art object production. He worked notably with the artist Fernand Thesmar, and it was in this way that the production of French cloisonné enamels began in 1872.
