Brown patina bronze of a Man Carrying a Child on his Back, by Gaston Leroux (1854-1942)
Beautiful bronze sculpture with brown patina, depicting a man standing on the side of a rock, carrying a child on his shoulder. The bronze rests on a quadrangular red marble base and is signed G. Leroux on the terrace. Leroux.
Gaston Leroux, also known as Veuvenot-Leroux, was born in Paris in 1854, and raised by his grandmother. In 1866, he joined his mother in Austria, where he began his career as a sculptor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, before being admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, where he was a pupil of Frannçois Jouffroy. He later settled in Bordeaux as a teacher of statuary, but also became the city's official statuary, completing a number of commissions for Bordeaux's monuments.
