A bronze group depicting Ariadne riding a panther, after a work by Johann Heinrich Dannecker . It represents a young, nude woman with her hair in a chignon and wearing a crown of vine leaves, as she is the wife of Dionysus, the god of wine. She is shown in a serene pose, to illustrate "the taming of wildness by beauty." Her slender, elongated body is typical of Neoclassicism. The figures rest on a rectangular bronze base. Our example dates from the mid-19th century.
Johann Heinrich Dannecker (1758-1841) was a German artist who worked in Stuttgart for the Duke of Württemberg. He was greatly inspired by antiquity. He created the design of Ariadne riding a panther in 1803 and executed it in marble in 1814. This version is now housed in the Liebieghaus Museum in Frankfurt.
