Herodias , or Herodias, granddaughter of Herod the Great, married her uncle Herod, with whom she had a daughter, Salome, according to the Judeo-Roman historian Flavius Josephus. She then left her husband while he was still alive to marry Herod Antipas, another uncle who had divorced Phasaelis, the daughter of the Nabataean king Aretas IV. This marriage led to tensions with the Nabataean kingdom, culminating in a battle that Herod Antipas lost. This defeat was considered by the people as divine retribution for the execution of John the Baptist. According to the Gospels of Mark and Matthew, Salome danced before her stepfather, Herod Antipas; charmed by her, he was ready to grant her every wish. Herodias asked for and received from her daughter the head of John the Baptist. A cousin of Christ, this charismatic and popular man, whom Herod Antipas seemed to fear, did not hesitate to tell him: "It is not lawful for you to take your brother's wife as your spouse." Later, Herod Antipas, angering the Romans with his excessive power, was deposed by the emperor Caligula. He was then exiled to southern Gaul. Herodias chose to follow him.
