The bronze sculpture "The Spring," with a medal patina, is signed Lucie Signoret-Ledieu. It depicts the goddess Diana, goddess of the hunt, seated on a rock from which a spring flows on the left. With her right hand, she drinks from a conch shell, while the other holds her bow and quiver, filled with arrows, by its strap. Her classical-style tunic, fastened by a round brooch at the shoulder, reveals one breast. Her hair is styled in a chignon and adorned with a headband bearing a crescent moon, her principal attribute. The base is decorated with leaves and signed Mme Signoret-Ledieu. The stepped circular plinth bears a cartouche inscribed "The Spring by Mme Signoret-Ledieu, awarded at the Salon." This rotating composition lends a certain refinement to the young woman.
Lucie Signoret-Ledieu (1858-1904) was a French artist who trained as a student of Jean Gautherin. She was a member of the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs (Central Union of Decorative Arts). From 1878 onwards, she exhibited plaster figures at the Salon and received numerous awards. Her sculpture, The Spinner, is on display at the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Museum of Fine Arts) in Dijon.
