Brown patina bronze statue depicting Hermes (or Mercury in Roman mythology), messenger of the gods, pausing to adjust his sandal. An athletic young man, he wears a winged headdress, winged shoes and holds the caduceus. The bronze was inspired by a 2nd-century statuette: "The god Hermes (Mercury) fastening his sandal, known as "Cincinnatus", discovered in the 16th century in the Theater of Marcellus in Rome. The marble depicts the god Hermes in the guise of Cincinnatus, a famous Roman politician, consul and dictator of the Republic. The marble, based on a Greek original, is in the Louvre Museum. Our bronze figure rests on a circular base in Vert-de-Mer marble. XIX° period, Circa: 1890 Dim: W:17,5cm, D:17,5cm, H:62cm. In very good condition.
