bronze sculpture depicting Diana the Huntress holding a bow. Her quiver is suspended at her side by a belt passing beneath her breasts. She wears a crescent moon, the goddess's attribute. In an elegant pose, she appears to be observing the trajectory of the arrow she has just released. The sculpture is signed " Moreau Math. Hors concours " on the base. The statue rests on a pink marble plinth with a gilt bronze mount.
Mathurin Moreau (1822-1912) was a French sculptor, son and pupil of Jean-Baptiste Moreau. He distinguished himself with collectible bronzes depicting feminine grace, genre scenes, and allegories. He won the second Prix de Rome in 1842 with Diomedes Carrying Off the Palladium and exhibited at the Salon from 1848 onwards, where he received numerous awards.
