Gaston Leroux, also known as Veuvenot-Leroux, was born in Paris in 1854. He was raised by his grandmother, and in 1866 he joined his mother in Austria, where he began his career as a sculptor at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. He was later admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under François Jouffroy. Later, he settled in Bordeaux as a professor of sculpture and also served as the city's official sculptor, creating numerous commissions for Bordeaux's monuments. He is also known for a series of official busts and many Orientalist sculptures, including: Young Snake Charmer, Arab Warrior, and Rebecca.
