Wooden veneered two-body chest of drawers, featuring two drawers in the upper part, surmounted by leaves bordered by a fluted ormolu rod with lily flowers, centered by a finely chased mask-shaped pull knob. Inside, six drawers for storage, delicately adorned with gold foliage. The lower part, with the same ormolu decoration, also opens with two front panels, resting on leafy sabot feet. It features a sliding shelf with two pull handles. The cabinet conceals a locker with door on the side. A fluted strip underlines each part of the cabinet. Good overall condition, with some minor signs of wear.
The symmetry and refined simplicity of our furniture's ornamentation are characteristic of the Louis XVI style. Never before in the history of French furniture have cabinetmakers shown such finesse in the execution of detail. Their taste in the choice of neoclassical decorative motifs, rich enough to alleviate the aridity of orthogonal forms, was very assured. An incomparable feature of the Louis XVI period was the meticulous treatment of ornamentation by sculptors and, above all, bronze workers. Among the most common motifs, often inherited from ancient architecture, are dentils, fluted baguettes, friezes of acanthus, oak or pearls, interlacing, ribbons, rosaries and lancets.
Among the most popular pieces of furniture at the end of the 18th century were chests of drawers, base cabinets, cabinets and sideboards. The number of shelves and their arrangement varied considerably from one piece to another; some models featured a large mirror as a back.
