Horseshoe-shaped jewellery box made of crystal and bronze gilt. The lid is chiselled with garlands of roses and is decorated with a miniature representing Madame de Sévigné (1626-1696).
A talented letter writer living at the court of Louis XIV, she was much appreciated throughout the 19th century. The box's crystal receptacle is decorated with gilded bronze garlands of flowers, tied with ribbons. The bottom of the box is carved with a radiating motif. It stands on three feet decorated with foliate scrolls, terminating in stylized shells. The miniature bears the signature "Marc" (Marc-Louis Arlaud?) at top right.
