Louis XV period "boat-shaped" duchesse chaise longue in molded, carved, and lacquered blue and cream wood, by the renowned cabinetmaker Jean-René Nadal the Elder (1733-1783). It rests on eight cabriole legs adorned with floral motifs. The duchesse is a very elegant, upholstered chaise longue that appeared in France during the reign of Louis XV and was used by fashionable women as a daybed. This typically feminine seat met a greater demand for comfort and convenience. Aesthetically, it marks the transition from the Rococo style of Louis XIV to lighter furniture, both in design and color.
The so-called "boat-shaped" model always has two backrests, often of different heights. Our duchess chair is stamped "J. NADAL L'AÎNÉ". A very beautiful 18th-century model.
