Beautiful Louis XVI style fire screen in carved wood partially gilded with parrots. The pediment is decorated with a frieze of gadroons covered with a garland of flowers gathered in a knotted crown in the centre. The uprights are in the form of fluted columns topped by connecting dice decorated with rosettes and surmounted by palms. A frieze of ovals and a braid surrounds the central tapestry made of cream fabric decorated with branches and parrots. The reverse side is in plain light green fabric. The ensemble rests on two bipod feet sculpted with acanthus leaves. They are connected by a fluted crosspiece with a ringed centre.
A fire screen is a piece of furniture that serves to protect against the excessive heat of the flames. Once the fireplace is extinguished, it also limits the draughts that can come from the hearth. It can take different forms such as a fan, a railing or, here, a screen.
