Empire period trumeau mirror, in wood and gilded stucco. This freestanding mirror is framed by two antique-style pilasters in wood and stucco, gilded with gold leaf. A rectangular pediment enhances the whole and features a mythological scene in relief, a frieze of scrolling foliage and flower buds, all worked in gold leaf. A frieze of palmettes adorns the lower part of this large wall mirror.
What is a Trumeau mirror?
The trumeau is an architectural element of great historical and aesthetic value. Originating in the Middle Ages, it reflects the engineering of the period. It represents an important part of art history and architectural heritage. From the 18th century onward, trumeaux became essential elements in the interior design of dining rooms, libraries, and other living spaces, whether sculpted or painted. They are most often found above fireplaces. It is not uncommon to see trumeaux where the decorative elements are larger than the mirror itself. Over the centuries, the architecture of trumeaux has evolved, as exemplified by the one we offer here in an Empire style, recognizable by its antique-inspired decorations enhanced with palmettes, finials, and other motifs.
