A beautiful Louis XVI style fire screen in partially gilded carved wood, decorated with parrots. The pediment features a gadrooned frieze surmounted by a garland of flowers gathered into a wreath and tied in the center. The uprights are fluted columns topped with connecting blocks decorated with rosettes and crowned with palm fronds. An egg-and-dart frieze and a braid border the central tapestry, made of cream fabric with a design of branches upon which parrots are perched. The reverse side is made of plain light green fabric. The whole rests on two bipod feet carved with acanthus leaves. They are joined by a fluted crossbar with a central ring.
A fire screen or fireplace screen is a piece of furniture used to protect against the excessive heat of the flames. Once the fireplace is out, it also helps to limit drafts coming from the hearth. It can take various forms, such as a fan shape, a grille, or, as seen here, a screen.
