A small gilt and patinated bronze clock featuring porcelain flowers and a young woman holding a Chinese parasol in one hand and a drawered container in the other. A turban-like headdress conceals the woman's hair, and she wears a long gown cinched at the waist with a sash. Around her, a gnarled tree with patinated bronze oak leaves and porcelain flowers supports the clock movement. It is set within a gilt bronze mount, finely chased with flowers and leaves. The undulating base is representative of the Rococo style. The clock has a cock-shaped movement. During the reign of Louis XV, designers enjoyed playing with contrasting materials. Porcelain elements were commissioned by merchants from manufacturers and then delivered to artisans. Porcelain pieces from various sources could be juxtaposed on the same clock. Napoleon III period, circa 1860. Dimensions: W: 25cm, D: 15cm, H: 32cm.
