This work by Takashi Baba, a Japanese Bizen ceramicist, once again demonstrates his mastery of organic and sculptural forms. This ceramic Ikebana vase evokes a spiral, almost mineral shape, reminiscent of natural elements such as shells or fossilized horns. The raw texture of the object is highlighted by shades of brown and black, resulting from the wood-fired kiln typical of Bizen-yaki. Baba plays with form and material, creating a piece that seems alive and in motion.
Bizen ceramics (Bizen-yaki) is one of the oldest Japanese pottery traditions, dating back over 1,000 years. It is distinguished by the absence of glaze and its natural textures, achieved through high-temperature wood-fired kilns. This process creates unique patterns, due to the vitrified ash, and deep, earthy colors. Bizen-yaki is prized for its robustness, its raw aesthetic, and its close connection to nature.
