An imposing, ovoid-shaped covered vase in gilt bronze, richly decorated on each side with a medallion depicting a deity on a chariot amidst clouds, within a frame decorated with friezes and garlands, a putto at the top and a satyr at the bottom. The whole is surrounded by scrolling foliage, interlacing patterns, and chimeras. The foot is decorated with garlands of fruit and flowers. The double handles are adorned with vegetal garlands and terminate in vine leaves. The vase is surmounted by a pinecone-shaped lid.
A 19th-century Neo-Renaissance work in the style of the ornamental designer Claude-Aimé Chenavard (1798-1838). A vase by him, originally produced by the Sèvres porcelain factory and now in the collection of the Château de Fontainebleau, is known. This example, made of polychrome porcelain paste, was so successful at the 1832 Royal Manufactories Exhibition that a version in blue and white porcelain was produced and is now in the Louvre Museum. A gilt bronze version is in the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
Condition report: in good condition with its original gilding cleaned and slight wear and spots of verdigris.
