An important Louis XIV period carved and gilded wooden mirror with side panels. This large mirror has a richly carved and gilded wooden frame, adorned with mercury glass side panels. The decoration, executed with great care, consists of foliate scrolls, volutes, and flowers, punctuated at the corners by stylized shell motifs. The pointed arch pediment is centered by a large bearded mascaron with acanthus leaf hair, framed by floral garlands and surmounted by a crown of feathers. The whole rests on its original wooden structure, the back of which is composed of horizontal planks joined by tenons and pegs. The decorative elements, characteristic of the late 17th century, testify to the virtuosity of ornamental sculptors during the reign of Louis XIV.
Condition report: some minor repairs and wear to the gilding. Minor alterations to the mirror's silvering.
