Two Romantic-era paintings depicting a rural landscape with a mill, and a pastoral scene populated by shepherds with their flocks and peasants dancing or conversing. This theme, known as " pastoral, " was very popular in 18th-century French painting and echoed Rousseau's ideas in favor of the original harmony between humankind and nature.
