A Louis XV style commode inlaid with satinwood and rosewood, adorned with gilt bronze mounts. Of curved form, it is decorated with marquetry of branches and flowers in violetwood and rosewood, set within gilt bronze rocaille cartouches. The uprights are highlighted with elegant openwork mounts. Prominent rocaille bronze scrolls unite the two drawers and form their handles. Both drawers can be locked with a key. The cabriole legs terminate in foliate bronze sabots. The piece is surmounted by a white breccia marble top.
Under Louis XV, bronze allowed artisans great creative freedom in their compositions, combining various Rococo motifs. They favored decoration over form, curves over straight lines, resulting in dynamic ornamentation. This omnipresence of the Rococo motif was accompanied by numerous references to nature and plant life. This late 19th-century commode reflects the fine chasing of bronzes from the Louis XV period, as well as its ornamental repertoire. Its quality can be compared to that of the works of François Linke (1855-1946), a great Parisian cabinetmaker of the late 19th century who used the Louis XV style vocabulary, imbuing it with great originality.
