jewelry box in veneered wood dating from the Napoleon III . The body of the box and its gently curved lid are finely inlaid with lozenges outlined in light wood stringing. The colored woods, stained red and green, accentuate the relief effect. The gilt bronze mounts are chased with acanthus leaves, palmettes, and foliate interlacing. Friezes of pearls, egg-and-dart motifs, and acanthus complete the ensemble. The interior of this Louis XVI style box is lined with blue velvet. The box rests on four scrolled foliate feet. 19th-century jewelry boxes are among the most refined and sought-after antiques today.
