An important Art Nouveau white marble bust depicting Cosette , the heroine of Victor Hugo " Les Misérables " (1862). She wears the Phrygian cap—a symbol of liberty—linking her cause to that of the nation. Having regained her freedom, Cosette is portrayed as a ravishing young woman, whose proud and determined attitude is reminiscent of Marianne, the symbolic figure of the Republic and icon of liberty. The bust bears the inscription "COSETTE" on the base. It is signed in relief on the back: "A Bertier".
