An elegant Carrara marble sculpture depicting Venus (Aphrodite) wearing a light veil, seated on a rock, with Cupid (Eros) at her feet holding a large bouquet of flowers and surrounded by swallows. This marble group is an allegory of spring, heralded by the presence of the swallows. The sculpture is signed Mathurin Moreau. Circa 1900
The son and pupil of Jean-Baptiste Moreau, Mathurin Moreau won the second Prix de Rome in 1842 and exhibited at the Salon of 1848, where he received numerous awards. His work is prolific, with a predilection for feminine grace, figures and genre scenes, as well as allegories.
Condition report: In good condition with a restoration to the wings of a swallow, and to the tips of the toes of love.
