A Napoleon III period gilt bronze and brass fan-shaped fire screen with a retractable grille. The openwork central post is decorated with shells, acanthus leaves, a finial, climbing olive branches, and a woman's face. It is surmounted by a fire pot and rests on scroll-shaped feet. The nine openwork brass leaves, featuring geometric patterns, unfold to form a protective grille against sparks from the hearth. Bars hold the grille in place when the fire screen is closed.
