A Napoleon III display cabinet in ebonized wood veneer inlaid with stringing, delicate scrolls, foliate tendrils, and brass vases of flowers. The arabesques and decorative whimsy of these compositions recall the marquetry designs of Bérain (1640-1711), a French ornamentalist and designer for the King's Bedchamber and Cabinet, whose style, inspired by grotesque art, marked the era of Louis XIV. The cabinet opens with two partially glazed doors and rests on toupie feet. The interior reveals three wooden shelves. The front and sides are adorned with gilt-bronze mounts and moldings, chased with flowers and jagged foliage. This Louis XIV-style ornamentation was very fashionable in France during the reign of Napoleon III. The use of dark wood and the decorative motifs inspired by antique styles make this display cabinet a typical piece of furniture from the Napoleon III period. 19th century period, Circa: 1850. Dimensions: W: 88cm, D: 33cm, H: 158cm. In very good condition, with slight wear to the wood, and a restoration of the brass marquetry on the lower left panel.
