A rectangular Neo-Renaissance style copper box, enameled in a reddish-brown color and enhanced with grisaille and gilt trim. The domed, hinged lid features a rich enameled and painted relief decoration. It is adorned with a quatrefoil medallion depicting a woman in profile, dressed in 16th-century costume, as evidenced by the elaborate ruff. This medallion is surrounded by raised scrollwork. On the box's body, quatrefoil medallions are decorated with either a fleur-de-lis or an intertwined monogram, "HD," for Henry II and his mistress, Diane de Poitiers.
The inside of the box is entirely enameled and features gold highlights.
This box is a fine example of the Neo-Renaissance style that developed after the Restoration. In the decorative arts, the Renaissance style flourished, allowing for the revival of techniques such as enameling on copper.
Some wear to the enamel.
