A pair of Restoration period opaline vases , has a flared neck and rests on a pedestal and a square, gilt-bronze base chased with foliage. The body, neck, and foot are adorned with Gothic arcades enclosing medieval-inspired figures—troubadours and minstrels, playing music or dancing. This gold-colored decoration was hand-painted by the workshop of Jean-Baptiste Desvignes .
Appearing towards the end of the 11th century, troubadours were singing poets who travelled throughout France and visited the courts of kings, princes, and barons. They were accompanied by musicians called minstrels, who played the trumpet, violin, or psaltery.
