The 19th century, or the century of " Egyptomania ," was marked by a fascination among Westerners for the history and culture of Pharaonic Egypt. From Bonaparte's expedition to Egypt in 1798 until the inauguration of the Suez Canal in 1869, the country fueled curiosity. Archaeological discoveries captivated scientists and enchanted artists and collectors. The Empire style, in fact, became characterized by Egyptomania.
