An important pair of chased and patinated bronze andirons depicting winged putti above alternating superimposed vases of flowers. The lower part of the andirons is decorated with intertwined dragons, masks, and fantastical figures. Work in the Renaissance style.
A andiron is a large fire dogs in use since the Middle Ages.
The top of this kitchen utensil held a container for burning coals, hence the name andiron. These large, heavy iron andirons used in monumental fireplaces came in various types: cup-shaped andirons for heating dishes, and hook-shaped andirons. The laundry tub was also placed on them. From the 18th century onwards, the andiron became a decorative andiron, which can still be found today in ornamental fireplaces, like the ones shown here.
