The Bayeux factory was founded in 1812 by Joachim Langlois, former director of the Valognes factory. In 1824, seeking to attract Parisian customers, Langlois opened a warehouse in Paris, first at 88 rue du Faubourg-Saint-Martin, then at number 80. Later, this warehouse was moved to 8 rue Martel. During the 1820s, the factory's reputation spread far beyond France, reaching Russia and the United States. Its renown soon reached the highest echelons of society. Thus, in 1828, the Duchess of Berry and numerous other prominent figures visited the Paris store and made significant purchases. At his death in 1830, Langlois left behind a factory at its peak, employing up to 150 people. His widow, Marie-Jeanne le Cavélier, took over the management of the business. The new products were officially presented for the first time in 1834 at the Great National Exhibition in the Place de la Concorde in Paris. The factory was awarded a bronze medal there. In 1847, his two daughters, Jeanne and Sophie, took charge of the factory for two years before selling it to François Gosse in 1849. In order to compete with the major Parisian manufacturers, he reduced the production of comparable luxury items and limited himself to simpler new designs and a few imitations of Japanese and Chinese pieces. In this way, he fully revived the factory's activity, which was richly rewarded at the Universal Exhibitions (New York 1853, Brussels 1857, and gold medals at the London Exhibition in 1862 and the Paris Exhibition in 1867). Nevertheless, the death of François Gosse in 1870 marked the beginning of difficulties, and his widow was forced to sell the business in 1878 to Jules Morlent. The factory remained in the hands of this family until its final closure on August 1, 1951.
