An exceptional pair of four-light urn-shaped candelabra. Each candelabra is decorated with an urn with handles in the form of winged women and a sheathed body ending in palmettes. The urns are adorned with figures of Cupid holding a wreath of roses and a torch, symbols of fidelity. These urns are surmounted by two back-to-back swans supporting four light arms with openwork palmette-patterned sockets. The candelabra rest on a rectangular base of "sea green" marble, decorated with finely chased gilt-bronze figures representing Fame and Victory.
This pair of candelabra is representative of the Directoire style. Indeed, influenced by the archaeological excavations carried out at Pompeii, the arts were enriched with a new decorative vocabulary. Thus, motifs such as the swan and classical figures appeared. This new decorative repertoire would be adopted during the First Empire, where the swan became one of the emblems of Empress Josephine.
Circa 1790-1800.
