A pair of engravings depicting young women bathing, delicately enhanced with watercolor. In a pastoral setting, these young women dry themselves after bathing in the stream. This serves as a pretext for evoking the sensuality of the female body, but the presence of the small dog, a symbol of fidelity, assures us of the purity of these young women. These depictions of female nudes are typical of Neoclassicism, with velvety and unified renderings of the flesh. One might think, in particular, of a reinterpretation of certain poses of women bathing by Dominique Ingres. However, the artist places the scene in a contemporary period, with women wearing Second Empire jewelry and hairstyles. The brightly colored dresses laid on the ground also reference the fashion of Napoleon III. Their gilded wooden frames are carved with delicate friezes of water leaves.
