A pair of Louis XV style gilt bronze andirons, triangular in shape with a flowing, flame-like foliate design, resting on two feet. In fireplaces, fires or andirons allowed bronze workers during the reign of Louis XV to express their creativity, combining various rocaille motifs or imitating nature. Indeed, the growing emphasis on realism in the treatment of bronze reflects the desire to rival nature itself. This is exemplified by this pair of andirons, which take on the swirling form of flames. Napoleon III period, circa 1850. Dimensions: L: 33cm, D: 15cm, H: 41cm.
