A fine small pair of Louis XV period mercury-gilt bronze andirons with cherubs. The two symmetrical pendant putti are seated on foliate scrolls. Circa 1760
In fireplaces, the fires or andirons allowed bronze workers under Louis XV to display the greatest imagination, combining different rocaille motifs or imitating nature. Indeed, the concern for realism, maintained with increasing intensity in the treatment of bronze, reflects the desire to rival nature.
