A pair of Louis XV style four-light candelabra in finely chased gilt bronze, one of which is signed "HV". The pommel-shaped stem, adorned with rocaille and foliage, extends onto light arms formed of acanthus leaf scrolls. Each gilt candlestick rests on a circular base decorated with scrolls and foliage. The candle cups are adorned with bud-shaped calyxes. This ornamentation of acanthus leaves and flowers is typical of the Rocaille style, widely imitated at the end of the 19th century. These bronze candlesticks, signed Henri Vian (1858-1904), are in the style of the work of the French ornamentalist and goldsmith Juste-Aurèle Meissonier (1695-1750), a leading figure of the Rococo movement under Louis XV. This bronze craftsman, active in the second half of the 19th century and based at 5 Rue de Thorigny (Picasso Museum) in Paris, produced numerous interior ornaments such as chandeliers, fireplaces, balustrades... We know of two signatures in cursive letters, the first "H.Vian" and then the second "HV" on his later works.
