A pair of four-light gilt and patinated bronze candelabra. Each candelabrum features a patinated bronze cupid sculpted in the round. This cupid, in the style of Clodion, is half-clothed and emerges from clouds. He holds a gilt bronze candelabra in his arms, each branch adorned with scrolls, foliage, and flowers. The candle sockets are decorated with finely chiseled oak leaves. At the center of the candelabra, a symbol of Bacchus in mythology, and a lyre with an eagle's head complete the composition. The candelabra rest on square white marble bases and Turquin marble plinths, embellished with beaded and twisted friezes and gilt bronze scrolls.
These candelabra are characteristic of a historical style that developed during the Second Empire. Indeed, Empress Eugénie, a fervent admirer of the Louis XVI style, had many imperial residences refurnished and redecorated, thus influencing the decorative arts.
