An important pair of Napoleon III gilt-bronze ewers, richly decorated in relief with stylized foliage, palmette friezes, and vine tendrils framing a frieze of putti representing the quadrivium (the four mathematical sciences in ancient theory: arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy). The handle is adorned with a cherub in the round and scrolling vine tendrils, terminating in a satyr's head. Each ewer rests on a round foot decorated with fluting and vine tendrils. Circa 1870
Condition report: very good condition. Original gilding with signs of wear consistent with age.
