The first drawing depicts a landscape with Apollo asleep and Mercury stealing his bow and his flock. This scene is in the foreground, with an antique landscape in the background, featuring a temple on the right and a castle in the distance. This mythological scene echoes the composition of Claude Lorrain.
The second drawing depicts a pastoral scene with animals grazing by a riverbank, and two women dressed in classical attire tending a goat. In the background, ancient ruins overgrown with vegetation bear witness to a bygone era. The whole evokes Italian landscapes and the compositions of Claude Lorrain (1600-1682), who often painted ruins and idealized scenes of the Italian countryside.
The two drawings, one in brown ink wash and the other in sepia-toned watercolor, are in their original giltwood frames with a blue passe-partout and an EM monogram of the artist, whom we have not been able to identify.
