Pair of Louis XVI style inlaid rosewood and gilded bronze console tables. The front opens onto a leaf decorated with an oval medallion forming a wreath of flowers held in place by a ribbon and finished with trophies of quivers and flaming torches, into which a patinated bronze depicting a pair of birds is set. There is a drawer at the waist with a handle in the shape of a rose wreath and laurel branches. The whole is decorated with friezes of ovals, coiled ribbons, meanders, pearls and acanthus leaves. The front jambs are fluted with gilded bronze asperges. White marble top. The interior is finished in light wood veneer. One of the two pieces of furniture is stamped "ébéniste GROHE à Paris" on the underside of the marble.
Guillaume Grohé: renowned cabinetmaker from Louis XVIII to Napoleon III
Guillaume Grohé (1808-1885) was a Parisian cabinetmaker from the Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt in Germany. Together with his brother Jean Michel, he ran the Grohe frère firm, which was active until 1884. Specializing in furniture in the style of the Ancien Régime, they were noticed at the 1834 Exposition des Produits de l'Industrie. After his brother's departure, Guillaume Grohe became one of the leading cabinetmakers of his time, supplying furniture for Louis XVIII, Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III.
